What is a Chiropractor?

Doctors of Chiropractic have 8 years of university education including anatomy, physiology, radiology, pathophysiology, and diagnosis. Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.

 

What is a Physiotherapist?

Physiotherapists have 6 years of university training and are experts in injury diagnosis. They assist people to restore, maintain and maximize their strength, function, movement, and overall well-being. They specialize in rehabilitation, injury prevention, and promotion of health and fitness.

 

What is a Massage Therapist?

Massage therapists are trained professionals that have undergone 3 years of training in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, professional communication and ethics. They are industry leaders in soft tissue therapy (muscles, connective tissue, circulation and drainage).

 

What should I wear to my appointment?

Non-restrictive clothing as you will be asked to move around including standing, bending, squatting and laying down. A one piece formal floor length gown is not ideal!

 

What do I need to bring?

Be prepared to provide your previous medical and surgical history. If available, bring your scan/MRI/x-ray/ultrasound reports and any notes you have received from previous practitioners or doctors about your condition including a list of medications.

 

How many visits will I need?

Treatment plan duration depends on your diagnosis, the severity of your impairments, age, occupation, past medical history, goals and other factors.  Re-evaluations will be done to assess your progress.

 

Do I have to be referred by a doctor?

No, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists and Massage Therapists can assess and treat without referral by a doctor. However, some health insurers require a doctors referral beforehand to cover the cost, we suggest calling your insurance plan if you have any questions.

Does my insurance cover my treatments?

If you have health benefits you are generally covered for Chiropractic, Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy. Insurance companies are all different and you should check with your provider for specific details including coverage amounts and the need for a Family Doctor referral.

 

Chiropractic Myths

No, imaging is not required for the vast majority of conditions. It is not standard practice and is not recommended under the latest health guidelines. There are scenarios and conditions where imaging may be required to help the practitioner determine the diagnosis. Please note that imaging only makes up a small component of the diagnosis process.

Recent studies have indicated that if you are going to respond to manual therapy, you will respond fast and in the early stages of care. It should not take months to start to see improvements. No, there is no scientific research showing causation of neck adjustments and strokes. We have many tools and techniques to help all people. If you do not feel uncomfortable having your neck adjusted we have alternatives that can help you. We do not force you into anything, we are here to help and your preferences are important. You are in charge of your care.
